The Team

A black belt on it's own is not a qualification to teach. To use an analogy: when a person passes their driving test, it does not make them a driving instructor.

To ensure that our instructors provide a safe and secure environment, they have completed the CMAA Martial Arts Instructor Level 1 UK National Training Programme.

This intensive course covers health and safety, teaching and training techniques, club risk assessments, insurance, dojo discipline, safeguarding, social media and codes of conduct, instructor ethics, club management, and first aid.

Our instructors also have enhanced DBS clearance and, as part of our CPD, complete refresher training every 6 months.

He holds CMAA Level 1 Instructor certification, has enhanced DBS clearance, specialist sports coach insurance, and regularly completes ongoing training as part of his commitment to high standards and student well-being.

Liam Healy

Danketsu Do Karate South Shields - Liam Healy Instructor

Liam is a qualified martial arts instructor who first began martial arts at a young age and rediscovered a love of the art later in life.

Having trained with several clubs over the years, he brings a broad perspective and deep understanding to his teaching.

A black belt, Liam also holds CMAA Level 1 Instructor certification, specialist sports coach insurance, and enhanced DBS clearance.

Liam specialises in bunkai—the practical application and analysis of kata movements for self-defence—which helps students understand how traditional techniques work in real-life situations.

Alongside teaching, Liam manages club administration and leads on safeguarding and student welfare, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all members.
